XP related question - file assocation

Where do I need to place desktop.ini? What folder should I put it in? My desktop has not worked correctly since I was hit by a virus. I have this desktop.ini file that I think will fix my desktop if I put it in the correct place.

the desktop.ini file is usually a hidden file in your desktop folder in your profile
