my bro is upgrading but both the gtx260 896mb ram and 9800gtx1gb are same price? which would be better perforance?

gtx260 is much faster. check out the 4870 also similar price range.

he only plays at 1680x1050. the x6x usually denotes mid range, and the x800 top end. So in this case at that res is the 260 better? and does the 260 use more or less power than the 9800? he got 500w psu. but it two yrs old now so prob only puts out 400-+

If both are the same price then it`s a no contest, the 260 is by far the better buy.

yes
ATI HD 4870 is better than GTX260
and ATI HD 4870X2 is better than all without gtx295
(sorry for my english)

its really a toss up between the hd 4870 and the gtx 260 216 core. they trade blows back and forth in games both the 512mb and the 1gb version of the hd 4870 compete with the core 216. id say research your games and find benchies that compare the 2 and choose the best for you.
