i think the thread name says it all...
difference between increasing the multiplier and the cpu frequency while overclocking?
 
Solution
OCing through an unlocked multiplier is simpler. You can raise the Multiplier and leave the CPU base clock alone. Raise CPU voltage as necessary to gain stability.

OCing through the base clock (only option on CPUs with locked multipliers) requires attention to multiple functions, as other parts of your system run off multiplications of the baseclock (like memory).
