Advice needed

Needing to either build or buy a new system. While looking around at systems on newegg it seems whether it is a dual or quad core or they all seem to be 64 bit running 64 bit OS? I have no experience of using a 64 bit OS but have read there is very little software out there to run on it? I also want nothing to do with vista?

I have about $500 or so to spend and want it for basic gaming, email, general web surfing and I want to be able to load MS Office 2003 on it.

Any and all help would be appreciated

  1. Vista 64-bit can run MS Office 2003 and FireFox and recent games all right. It's in fact better than XP when it comes to gaming, because it has DirectX 10. Why this hate for Vista???
  2. Vista 64 will also allow you to run programs in 32 bit compatibility mode.
  3. There's nothing wrong with Vista now that the 1st service pack has been released. Many run 64 bit Vista since there's no 4GB memory limitation. I would NOT recommend 64 bit XP though. 32 bit XP is (now) a little cheaper than Vista and works just fine for me. It seems that the XP vs Vista issue has become like the Intel vs AMD one, except that it's all Microsoft. I'm waiting for Windows 7, mainly since the release will roughly coincide with my next new build.
