Connecting notebook hardrives to desktop computers

Hello,
My notebook computer is not operating. I think it may be system software xp not allowing me to startup my computer. Is there a way to take my notebook hard drive and connect to my desktop without purchasing a external usb case?

Some hardware stores, like CompUSA, sell a converter that will make your laptop hard drive connect to a workstation like any other hard drive would. Other than that, an external enclosure is your only other option.
