A friend is curious about overclocking the E6300, and is wondering what the best motherboard for the job is. I provided him with the following options:

Gigabyte GA-G41M-ES2L

ASUS P5Q Pro

MSI G45M-FD

Good options? Is there anything I missed out?

Definetly the ASUS out of the three. Anyway for overclocking a core 2 duo it's best to go with a P45 based board. For overclocking on a budget, when you find that a decent P45 board is too much it's better to go with a P35 board rather than the P43 board or any of the G based boards. Even though the P43 board has PCI-E 2.0 it's overclocking potential falls short compared to comparable P35 boards or more expensive P45 boards.

Anyway you may also want to consider ASRock. It is the budget arm of ASUS but they seem pretty independent of ASUS and come out with some good stuff. If you don't need crossfire then take a look at.

ASRock P45TS $79.99

or if you want crossfire

ASRock P45XE $89.99

Well even if you don't need crossfire I say to spend a little more and go with the P45XE anyway :D. Some of the more expensive ASRock models come with wi-fi among their added options. Hey, it's nifty ^_^

Generally from what I've seen, the P45 boards are the best option for any of the Core2Duo or Core2Quad chips as far as overclocking potential.
