Hard drive problem

Please i will really appreciate if anyone can help me out. I have this seagate external hard drive which i was running a disk check on when the electricity went off. since then when i try to copy something onto it, it copies to a point and get stuck. i later tried formatting it with Linux mint 7. it formatted into a format named "exfat" and since then am unable to format to ntfs and also when i try copying something onto it, it get stuck and doesn't move again. i will really really appreciate if anyone could help out in this situation. thank you.

have you tried removing all partitions via disk manager in windows, the recreate the partition & format? (note this is destructive to existing data, but you probably knew that).
