I currently have a PC with an AMD Phenom II X4 940 processor, 4 Gigs of RAM and 2 8800GTs 512 in SLI. I was thinking about upgrading to a GTX 285 and ditch the 8800GTs. Is it worth it? How much more performance would I get? Or should I just wait longer for a better single GPU solution?
If I upgraded the monitor to one with native resolution of 1920x1080, would it be worth it to upgrade from the 8800GTs in SLI to a GTX 285? Would I see much improvement to justify the upgrade?
IMO, upgrade to an SLI setup, its cheaper now and a good jump in FPS. You'll want a new rig at some point and you'll probably want a DX11 card at that time, which a GTX285 is not. DX11 will be released as part of windows 7 and from what I read, it will be heavily used unlike DX10. I got a GTX 295 to replace my GTS 8800 512(92) and in FC2 and Crysis I have seen a 4x+ improvement with a e6850 cpu... Sounds absurd but true. Im waiting for DX11 cards to build my i7 rig.
Maybe not so much in fps but it`ll play more smoothly because it`ll have the full 1Gb of vram for the single core as opposed to 2x512Mb you currently have.
This link does n`t show either the GTX285 nor 8800GT in SLI but it`s the only one I know that comes close to comparing them (GTX280 and 9800GTX) just add about 10 percent to the 280 score and subtract 10 from the 9800 sli score.
Yeah, well I'm not convinced it's a worthy upgrade. Because I'd have to spend nearly $600 to get a GTX 285 and a 1920x1080 monitor and the improvement wouldn't be that great compared to what I have right now.
I guess I'm just gonna stick with what I have now and upgrade in the future when the amount of money spent will really make a big difference.
