Our current internet connection is through a T1 using a Cisco 2610 running IOS 12.1. The router has a WIC-1T CSU/DSU on the WAN side and a single 10/100 ethernet connection on the LAN side. Our service provider now offers what they call an EIA connection (Ethernet internet access). The connection we're upgrading to is 3 Mbs. Their tech support stated that I needed an Ethernet WIC card to replace my T1 CSU/DSU card on the WAN side but they couldn't give on specific advice. I have two basic questions ... can either the 2610 or 1720 be configured to work with this service and if so, what interface module will I need to do that? Secondly, does either router have a performance advantage over the other (if either can be used). We've been using the 2610 for years on the T1 with no problems, and the 1720 was used for months as a backup with no problem as well.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

To add another Ethernet port to your 2610 router you would need to purchase a NM-1E module. Its a standard 1 port Ethernet module. Its the only ethernet module available for the 2610 and will support what you need for the EIA WAN connection offered by your ISP.

If you still plan to use the 1720 as a backup router with this configuration you would need to purchase the WIC-1ENET= 1 port Ethernet module.

**These are both 10bt Ethernet modules.
