What modifications will I need to do this?
I'm looking to upgrade my 9800GTX and realizing how darn expensive nvidia cards are. So looking at prices the 4970x2 is cheaper than a GTX280..
any help appreciated

Yes, you can use that card. You won't be able to do SLI with it, though.
