i have a Acer Travelmate 2000 laptop but the keyboard does not work so am using an external keyboard. I need to run the Bootable CD and the Recovery CD using the external keyboard.

It should work ok.Go into the bios F2? key usually when starting. Make sure Legacy usb is enabled. Also change the boot order to CD first

where do i find the legacy usb

the bios (which is on the motherboard)will have various tabs on the top of the screen. click each one until you find it in the list. To get into the bios press the F2 key when starting the computer.
