WTF are you talking about HD4830??!! And I can't afford a GTX295. I wan't a sigle GPU SOLUTION.Too many issues with SLI.

Sensible questions ; What resoloution and what is the rest of your spec?
February 19, 2009 7:55:07 PM

E8400@3600 MHZ ,4GB ram ,Asus P5N-D. And I play at 1280x1024.I KNOW IT'S NOT THE BEST RESOLUTION.I need a higher one to truly make use of sli. But my parents won't let me buy a new monitor with MY OWN money.

SLI 8800GTS 512 and 1280x1024? You are already at way overkill.

A single 8800GTS 512 will run nearly everything you throw at it quite handily at that resolution. You also know that that 8800 overclocks very well? Keep the shader clock and core locked, raise the core speed to around 775. (stock is 650)
Then raise the memory very slightly, a little at a time till you start having errors.
The memory is pretty sensitive, usually around 1100 is about the best you will get.
I usually just leave the memory a stock, and work with the core/shader clock.

To do any better than what you have, you would need a GTX295, or a 4870X2.

However, once again, at the res you are running, you don't need more than 1 of the cards you have right now.

February 19, 2009 8:27:10 PM

Are you shure it can do 775 mhz?I'm at 725 now.Idon't want to drastically reduce they're lifetime.Memory is at 1015.Memory doesn't really increase fps that much.
Is evga precision a good overclocking software?
And btw is there a way to make the monitor malfunction over time?LOL.So I could buy a new one.I have this 17'' monitor for 3.5 years now .I missed some great sales. There was a 22'' samsung for only 140$!!
February 19, 2009 8:35:00 PM

Keep the 8800 GTS SLI, more than enough at 1280x1024.
February 19, 2009 9:00:20 PM

Your cards are already extreme overkill for that resolution. Buying a new card no matter what it is will be a total waste of money. Even when/if you upgrade the monitor and start playing at say 1920 x 1080, the cards you have now are still more powerful than a single GTX 285.

Who said anything about 4830?

You provided no info, so I gave you a range of options.

@ YETYHUNTER; You could make it mess up by blocking the cooling vents;)
As for not liking SLI, take one out, as the others have said one 8800 would be enough.

My BFG will do 825, but I have to lock the fan on high, and it's pretty loud. 775 seems to be something it can deal with pretty well.
I just use Rivatune, has worked well for me.

But really, for the res you are running, you could simply pull one of the them out and shelve for a backup.
Try it, you may be surprised to find you won't notice any difference! And you may just get rid of a few issues running games
that don't play too well with SLI, less heat in the case, less power drain on the PSU, etc.
SLI is really kind of pointless at what you have to run with right now.
February 19, 2009 9:32:11 PM

It is pointless, its totally pointless. Odds are its hurting his performance. Crossfire/SLi is worthless and pointless on any res below 1680 x 1050

You could have an unforunate accident......say like accidentally spilling a cup of coffee or water into the top of the monitor..LOL
Make sure it's turned on when you do so you can enjoy the visual fireworks!!!!!
Or, you could say have the power cord wrap around your leg and when your parents are around just stand up and walk away from your comp and the monitor will come flying off your desk and they'll know you need a new one then!
Good Luck!
February 20, 2009 1:32:38 PM

I do get better FPS even at this low resolution with SLI so I will not take one card out.
I could use nhancer and set profiles for games that have issues or run perfectly with 1 GPU.And let SLI enabled for games that use SLI even at this resolution.
Here you can compare one 8800 GTS 512 to the 9800GX2(wich is basicaly 8800 GTS 512 SLI) and there is a big FPS gain even at 1280x1024.

That's pretty difficult with an LCD.
February 20, 2009 2:49:16 PM

The ''accident'' does not hvae to be that evident. Is there a way to damage it over time, set the wrong settings or somethinG?
February 20, 2009 5:34:07 PM

The reason why I wanted to upgrade to a sigle GPU solution is because OF THE STUTTERING!!
Don't know how to get rid of.Any ideas?

Trade one of those gtx cards for a monitor

+1

www.craigslist.org

I've got a 512 8800GTS at 770 core/1830 shader /1080 memory. I game at 1920x1200, and I'm playing most games on high/very high with Stalker Clear Sky, Crysis, and Crysis Warhead being the exceptions.

But I run COD4, COD W@W, Left 4 Dead, etc completely maxed out.

The 8800GTS is an amazing card, overclocks like crazy, and IMO should be on the same tier as the 8800/9800 GTX on Tom's monthly graphic cards for the money chart.

I was talking about the 8800GTS (g92). For the money, stability, speed, and overclocking they were really hard to beat.

February 21, 2009 1:55:05 PM

Asus p5n-d,E8400@3600 mhz,4gb ram,vista 64bit.
February 21, 2009 3:03:13 PM

I think i'm gona keep the cards. But I really need a larger monitor! But to get a new one the current one must die!!!
If I set the refresh rate to 75hz and not 60 (default 1) will it die faster,or if i set a larger resolution than the native one.It can actully show 1600x1200.
a b U Graphics card
February 21, 2009 3:35:52 PM

Huh?
Exactly what monitor do you have?
Setting the refresh or the resolution higher will not do anything, if the monitor supports those modes.
If I understand correctly, your monitor will support higher refresh rates, and 1600x1200 resolution......and you are running 2 8800GTS's in SLI at 60hz and 1280x1024? Something just does not sound right here.?!?!?!?
Again, exactly what is your monitor, model and make please?
If it is an LCD, it won't do anything. If it is a CRT, then yes, you can kill it that way.
However, are you sure if that one dies are you going to get something better, or just another cheap replacement?
( I remember how my parents were, and I would have gotten another cheap one, probably worse than what I had)

Not exactly. Even at 1280x1024, crossfire will still give you a good fps boost when maxing out games such as Crysis.

Replacing two 8800GTSs with a single 4830 is huge downgrade. lol

I actually said 4350. :D
February 21, 2009 8:00:14 PM

My monitor is a samsung syncmaster 711mp 17'' monitor and the native resolution is 1280x1024.If I set it at 1600x1200 I instantly get a message ,,This mode is not optimal, optimal mode is 1280x1024,60hz''. The monitor was designed for 1280x1024.
I can't read anything if at 1600x1200 and 17'' is WAAAAY to small for that resolution.

And yes I'm shure i'm getting a better one if this dies.I bought this one for 180Euros 3 years ago and now I can find 22'' samsungs for 160Euros.
February 21, 2009 8:34:31 PM

Same issue as my 22" widescreen Hanns-G. The native is 1680 x 1050 but I can set it to 1900 x 1200, but its un-usable unless you want to go blind from the blur, shaking screen, and ghosting.
February 21, 2009 8:54:24 PM

That is not an issue. The monitor was not designed for that resolution, thats all.
17'' monitors with 1600x1200 DO NOT EXIST.It's ussels for that size.

IS THERE A WAY TO KILL IT?? If my parents were more comprehensive I could just sell it but they are not.
February 21, 2009 9:04:14 PM

go buy a 24inch 1920x1200 like a g2400wd from benQ. Best use of your money at your budget/current config.

February 22, 2009 4:20:32 PM

Jesus.......NO you cant kill the damn monitor with wrong settings.

And its a 17" monitor, they go for $100 brand new on Newegg. You wont be able to get more than a few bucks selling it.
February 22, 2009 5:32:05 PM

Now I'm stuck with this tiny monitor.Oh well,I guess it will DIE one day.
DIE MONITOR DIE!!! loL

February 22, 2009 8:00:46 PM

Tiny monitor? jeez, most CRT monitors just 4-5 years ago were using 800x600 IIRC.

A 17 inch at 1280x1024 is good enough to play most games. Unless you're watching some HD movie, you don't need a 22 inch monitor.

But if you really hate that monitor, I'll be happy to compensate you and release your from that burden for paypal-cash.
February 22, 2009 8:16:13 PM

O would like to but my parents wont let me to sell it.They say it's good enough. They just use it to surf.
