Xbox formatted external HDD

Hello,
My son formatted my backup external HDD by plugging it into his xbox 360. It had over 3 years worth of uni work on it and I really need the data. The xbox has overwritten some of the drive (about 2gb of a 500gb drive) any pointers to recover would be great. My understanding is that it was an NTFS partition that has been reformatted as FAT32

You can use recovery software. I have downloaded one from cgsecurity.org. I have recovered all of the data by using that testdisk software. After that i will try to recover NTFS table..that might help to bring the disk back into status where it was before connecting with xbox.
  4. When external hdd is formatted, you may use data recovery software to scan hdd and restore lost data, see this free step by step guide: http://goo.gl/MNWGH

Take note that you'd better stop using the hard disk before you get back lost files. This is because that when you continue using the hard drive, new files may be written to hdd, which may use the space of lost files, and hence causes files overwritten and make those files unrecoverable.

However, you never know whether hard drive is really overwritten as the files may or may not use the space of those files. So you can download the free software and scan the hard drive to see whether those files can be detected.

You may need a hard drive enclosure if you dont have one.
