Very slow startup

I was having problems with my computer starting slowly, when it never started after three hours , i simply reformatted, well now after a fresh install it;s still starting very slow, and the mouse is non responsive and all of this happened before i connected it to the iternet, so i"m pretty sure I.m virus free, also, Im hearing a grinding noise somtimes can't tell if it's one of the hard drives of dvd drives, Help!
