im replacing a power supply on a system and it doesnt have a 4pin only the 20 pin.. the new power supply has both 20 and 4 pin. will using ONLY the 20 pin power up the board not causing any issues? the board is easily 8 years old.

The extra 4-pin connector is for newer demands. As you know by now the "24-pin" can split into a 20-pin and 4-pin connector.

I'm not certain but I think the 4-pin connector is for newer CPUs. It's easily googled, but the question has been answered.

The 20 + 4 pin was needed to supply more 12v ground and source of 12v for modern more power hungry video cards addressing PCIE in particular. OP what DXrick said.

The 12v into the MB is just that 12v nothing more nothing less. The added 4 pin connector is basically an added ground plus add source of the same 12v power. Whatever you say.

I believe when PCIE took over from AGP, the additional 12v 4 pin was added to the 20pin at that time.
