This is my first build so any advice is much appreciated. I would like a good gaming computer but can only spend around $900 - $1000.

Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3P Intel P45 LGA775 ATX or ASUS P5Q-E LGA775 ATX Motherboard, Intel P45

Intel Core 2 Duo E8400

Xigmatek HDT-S1283

Two Mushkin 2x2GB DDR2 800 Memory

Radeon HD4870 512MB PCI-E 2.0 PowerColor AX4870

640GB SATA 3.5in WD WD6400

I will be using Vista 64 bit. What would be a good power supply? What else do I need? Thank you.

Go with the Gigabyte board.

You will probably want a case...

PSU:

Do you need to fit a monitor into this budget? Here is a good one:

Use this promo code and get $10 off: EMCABCHAC

This hard drive is the fastest 7200rpm available right now,

Your other choices look good. That PSU will allow 2 of those video cards later on if you want. You don't need 8 gb of ram right now if money is tight, so you could just get one of those kits to start out with and then get another one later.

The Dark Knight...lol got to love the marketing. But yeah do go with that cooler instead, it will be more secure and not put strain on your mobo.

The case that Proximon linked is good, I have it but its more expensive than the Antec 300 which is a great case for the price, and you are on a budget. The S1283 will fit in the Antec 300, I checked ;)
