My AMD phenom II x4 965 is running slow

Hello,
my computer is bogging down running Cubase 4 with an AMD phenom II x4 965 and 4 gb ram with Windows 7. Shouldn't the computer with a quad core processor handle that program better than my laptop with intel Centrino dual core 1.88 GHZ and 4gb of ram? Could I have done something wrong building the quad core computer?
