What I thought would be a simple Google search has stumped me. I am looking for a 40 X 40 X 10mm 12v 3-pin fan to cool my Northbridge heatsink. I would like the input watts to be << 1.4 and the amperage to be much less than one. Quiet of course. And a MTBF of 50000 hours (five years). What's out there is the 35000 MTBF class. Call me picky. Price isn't that important; I don't care if it costs $3.99 or $13.99.

The closest thing that I have found is EVERCOOL's model: EC4007M12B. See here (about 7 rows down): http://www.evercool.com.tw/products/fan_4007.htm

Less than 25 db isn't great but acceptable. However, I can't find anybody who sells this particular model. I don't want to buy APOS that either fails or starts squeaking after two years. Most of this stuff seems geared to vars who are looking for a low price at volume; I want to buy one. I just want something that I don't have to worry about.

What's out there and how do I order it?

H8,
Thanks for the pointer. I had looked at some of those fans earlier in my wondering and dismissed them. The Sunon MagLev was a fan I hadn't considered. A little loud but the MTBF looks about right. Reading about the technology I am curious as to why it should be so loud. I suppose I can buy a couple different types and try them out.

Thanks again,

Model P/N VDC AMP WATTS RPM CFM db weigh (g)
HA40101V4-0000-999 12 0.065 0.8 4500 5.3 18.2 14.7
KDE1204PFV1 11.MS.A.GN 12 0.09 1.1 7000 8.0 32 17
KDE1204PFV2 11.MS.A.GN 12 0.08 1.0 5800 7.0 27 17

The "V1" spins faster and is noisier.

I have searched the Newegg list but didn't see anything I liked. I probably saw this Sunon but passed over it the first time because of the noise. Now it looks like the best of the bunch, noise and all.

unclefester,
I like your thinking. :)

The fan has a MTBF of 20,000 hours. I was looking for 50,000. Still, 2.2 years of continuous operation isn't bad. Plus it's cheap to replace. The heat sink makes an interesting conversation piece.
