My friend is looking to build a low power and very cheap server to host an FTP.

So far he's bought a cheap case/psu along with 2x1tb Hitachi drives.

We are debating whether or not to go with Intel e1400 or AMD 4050e, and which setup to go from there, keep in mind this is a VERY cheap system, what can you recommend as far as getting a cpu?

Also given our case, would it be wiser to save a little and go with either an Intel or AMD single core CPU?

I guess it depends on how busy the FTP machine will be (how many clients) and what it is serving up, whether or not it will be processing video and slinging to clients, or just files and mp3s. Single core should work well, actually. If you go single core, go AMD, just for the fact that they are the cheapest for single core (if you are in the USA).
