okay, i have had my little hp desktop for about 6ish years now, and its on its last leg.

over the years, i have put in a gig of memory, a nvidia 7600 gs video card and a 250 gb wester digital IDE storage drive.

i will give you the current specs just for keepsakes, but really the old stuff doesn't matter that much in my opinion.
current:
nvidia gforce 7600 gs (AGP)
120 gb western digital IDE
250 gb western digital IDE
AMD Athlon XP 2600+ running at 2.08 GHz
2 - 512 Mb Sticks of DDR PC3200 Kingston Value RAM

what a pos right, but i would like to do some serious overhauling. i am definetly going to go quad core now that they are getting fairly cheep, and i would like to get a good graphics card but not pay through the nose for it. I am running on a 500 dollar budget here, and the parts wont actually get bought untill summer, so there is some room for change.

okay i have two setups, the first is Intel based.

Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231207

and now the AMD based list.

GFX card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161260
PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817104037

Memmory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231241

okay, these lists are not final, but i would like to stick with something simmilar if you do suggest changes, at least price range wise that is. the mobo has to be micro atx, nothing else will fit in my hp's case so if you are gonna suggest a different mobo make sure of the form factor.

i know my way around computers fairly well, and i have the help of a friend that knows his way around the hardware better than i do, i am just posting here for a wider opinion. so if you are talking about something dont be afraid to use advanced terms.

thanks for any help and/or time you put into helping me.

Theres really no point on building a pc now if you intend to buy it in the summer. Prices and availability will change between now and then. Wait until you intend to buy it before you start choosing parts, especially when its months away.
