I'm not a techie and need some help.

I just got a 4850 for my xps410. It only has 2gig of ram and was wondering if I should put more in when I upgrade to vista (for dx10). What is a good brand of memory for it and can that mobo handle more? Do I need to buy 2x2 gig ram or what?

I'm pretty out of touch with all this techie stuff and need help. Thanks in advance!

From the Dell website http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/desktops/xpsdt_410/pd.aspx?refid=xpsdt_410&s=dfh&cs=22&~tab=specstab :

- Up to 4GB Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM (667MHz, 2 or 4 DIMMs)

My GUESS is you have 2x1GB installed. Look under the hood and check - you should see 4 slots for memory, only 2 occupied. Since the spec SAYS it will take 4 DIMMs, you can add 2x1GB chips like this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231055

Note, however, upgrading to 4G will only give you about 2.75G memory unless you go 64-bit Vista.

Also, would you guys recommend going with windows 7 64 bit instead of just doing the vista upgrade? I know dx10 will work with windows 7...

Well... "upgrading" an existing installation causes all sorts of trouble. You can download the Win 7 RC and use that until Win 7 comes out, if you don't mind being one of MS's guinea pigs, uh, I mean valued testers :D.

Wrong ... the 410 will accept 4Gb or PC6400... Virtually everyone gets this wrong. Sure you can install 8Gb but the system will only access half of it. r!

Oh yes, forgot to add, 8Gbs of RAM should you be using 64 bit OS. If you multiboot 32 and 64 bit OS's on the same unit the 32 bit sees only 4Gb. r!
