Back in August '07, I bought myself a new computer which included a XFX 8800 GTS 320MB. I'm looking into using 3-D rendering software like Maya on it now, and despite probably having to upgrade the RAM to 4GB from 2, was wondering whether my card would struggle with the software, and also whether or not it would render properly despite not being a Quadro-base card.

3-D rendering software like Maya is more CPU intensive than GPU. Your best bet is a fast quad-core CPU, and a decent GPU. I have heard the higher end nVidia GPUs are pretty good with Maya, the old 8800gts you have may be a little strained, but should get the job done. Now, what kind of processor do you have??? :)

Better get a Core i7 920. It cost nearly same as that of a QX9950. and DDR3 Tri Channel RAM set. Also, Maya works better with Quadro cards. Coz, it need lot of rendering capacity to work with.

Best sell the card and put that money on buying a quadro card
