I just went from win 98 to win XP, I copied my old sims install over but I
no longer have the 2 or 3 registry entrys needed. Someone posted them
somewhere once, but they got lost in the shuffle.
Thanks.

They're on your disks.

I found that the installation of XP upgrade made a complete hash of my Sims
games and I had to reinstall them from scratch again.

I saved the Sims folder and put everything in it back in the reinstalled
version.

The keys and registrations in XP are kept in

Sims2 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\EA GAMES

and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Electronic Arts

It's a good idea to File, Export the registry keys to a backup floppy or cd
before you upgrade anything so that you can import them again later.

You should have your own registration numbers.

I think he meant there was a way to find them in the system registry. He
wasn't asking for keys.

You might want to try searching the EA site. I am pretty sure I saw
something there on how to find them before. Of course someone here probably
knows.

I had saved my prior install to my new hard drive. I didnt need serial
numbers, just how to tell the new XP registery where it was installed.
Someone posted 2 or 3 little text files that lookied "*.reg" or
something. You just clicked on them and it wrotr to the registry. It was
for backing up your entire sims installation into a test installation so
you DID NOT have to keep reinstalling after things go bad, and thank you
Maxis, they went bad often.
I am sorry if I did not make it clear, but never mind, I just wasted
another half a day again to reinstall.

Exporting the keys from the registry makes these .reg files. As I said.

When you get it running again save therelevant .reg keys to a floppy or cd
so that you can import them back if you have a problem again. If you change
the .reg extension to .txt you even can print out the list and list of your
registration numbers. You can change the .txt back to .reg again after.

I don't know of many people who managed to get the game to work properly
after the "upgrade" route. There was a lot of discussion about this at the
time XP came out.

I found that my game was put in a 7 gigabyte backup folder and was in a
complete mess. All the downloads were in it though.
