Is there a trick....

.....to uploading packaged lots to the Exchange? I've tried with six
different lots and every time I get the "upload failed" error message. Then
I tried uploading some at modthesims2 and couldn't get it to go there,
either. I'm on broadband cable hookup and downloading isn't a problem.
I've been building houses like mad lately and would love to share but just
can't seem to do it. I put the package file into a .rar for uploading to
MTS2.

Sometimes you get the message, but it's still actually uploading. Just
check to see if your modem is still sending something, and wait until
the modem is finished. Ignore what the program tells you.

I often get the "Upload failed" message but when I check, the lot is there
anyway.

Could it be your security settings or Firewall blocking the upload or EA not
finding/or allowed to find the cookie it needs to find on your computer?

I changed my settings to make the official site a trusted site and that
worked for me.

ie Tools, Internet Options, Privacy, Sites

First you go to the Official site and copy and paste the url into the box
"Address of Web site" and press the "Allow" button.

I find this tool best for blocking though - ie. gator.com etc. as you can
keep the Privacy settings high but still get the sites you like.

I don't have a firewall and my browser isn't even open when I'm uploading
(or trying to) because I do it from within the game. I don't use IE, I use
Firefox and it doesn't have a way to set privacy for indivdual sites. I
went to the website and looked for help and all it said was when you get the
error (#6) that I get, it means that the file is too big. How can that be
if everybody else uploads houses, too? Aren't they all big files?

I've tried it now 6 times with 3 different houses. I get the error message
every time and when I go to check, there's nothing uploaded to my page
there. I also can't seem to upload houses to MTS2. Everytime I try, I get
the same thing, it just sits there forever waiting for the website to
acknowledge that I'm trying to upload something.

Don't have a firewall???

You must be mad. I hope you have adequate other protection.

Sometimes you can get rejected by sites because they sense a Trojan or worm
in the file. Microsoft update rejected me entry once for that.

I do. My cable modem is connected to a router which is totally cloaked
online.

None of my AV programs detected anything.

How big are the house files?

Best wishes

I recently downloaded a house from the exchange that was 100 Mbs. LOL
So I wouldn't think size is the problem. Surely there is not any houses
over
100 mbs.

But the size of the download is an indicator of how many 'extras' have got
included in the lot file - hacks and additional recolours for the objects,
extra skins and so on. These extras can cause problems in gameplay and
occasionally in uploading - that's why I asked; it's not the size, it's
what's included in the file.

Personally, I wouldn't have touched a 100Mb download from the Exchange with
a barge pole - god knows what was in there!

Best wishes

Unfurnished they run around 15 to 50MB. Furnished they can be huge. I've
packaged them both ways. I've tried using winrar to compact them and upload
them to MTS2, also. Still no go. I hesitate to post photos of the houses
in the binaries because someone might ask where they can download it and if
I can't upload it anywhere, what's the point? I don't understand why others
can do it and I can't. Rather frustrating, I must say.

Yeesh. And here I thought a 750kb house I saw on the Exchange for TS1 was
huge. :p But I guess TS2 actually includes all the objects & textures in
with the houses instead of just code that tells which .far and such they
came from like in TS1. :p

If they're that big, you must be including lots of extras in the files - you
may not mean to do this but the game will package up any hacks and recolours
you have in your Downloads folder into the house file which then get
installed into the Downloads folder of the person who downloads your lot. I
think the recolours that get included are any custom-content you have
downloaded that are recolours of objects you have included in the house EVEN
IF you haven't actually used the recolour itself. Custom Walls and Floors
get packed up too, as do any skins family members are wearing (including
skin tones and hair which are HUGE files). To make a clean downloadable
house, remove your Downloads folder before you boot up the game to package
and upload the file (you can put it back later). As far as I can see, most
clean unfurnished lots are between 1-6 MBs in size. The bigger lots might
be a bit more but I don't pay much attention to those so I'm not sure, but
certainly not larger than 10MB. If you want to include some custom content
(e.g. walls and floors you've made yourself) then leave those files in the
Downloads folder.

Best wishes
Maxon

No-no-no! You post pictures !!!
Your Wedge house made my jaw drop. I wouldn;t download anything but it gave
me ideas and made me green with jealousy because I never thought of it
myself.

(and such nice small pictures, as well, for a dial-upper.)

Ok. I was able to get that one to upload to the exchange, but only after I
took out my downloads folder, as was suggested above, so the walls and
floors I used didn't show up. It's just the architecture, so to speak. if
anyone is interested, it can be found by searching under my name
madamejeanie.
