Memory speed supported by a processor, what does it actually mean?

Processors come with certain memory specification for example Core i7-870 comes with supported memory speed of 1333. Will a memory with higher clock rate when overclocked to speeds beyond 1333 not work? What will actually happen? Can somebody please explain this and better give a link to some article that explains what actually this processor memory specification mean?
