hi there, i would like to replace my 2 gb mushkin xp2 6400,with the mushkin ascent xp2 8500 (2 or 4 gb,i think i will go for 4 gb)
check them out here http://www.mushkin.com/doc/product [...] asp?id=663
on my P5WD2 E premium,its runing a Pentium D 950 3.4,
but would i need to overclock my cpu or is it going to detect it automatically?,if you know what i mean.because they have different frequencies?
thanks

It won't detect it automatically and it has nothing to do with overclocking the CPU. You need to overclock the memory to 1066 MHz. Are you expecting a measurable performance improvement?

lol but if i dont overclock the fsb, the mem frequency doesnt change!
and how are you going to overclock it to 1066 if this is a 1066 memory.i dont know what u mean, and i know that there is not a big difference i just want to have more performance on w vista, that is eating my 2 gb any ideas?

If not overclocked, your CPU bus speed is 1333 MHz. To run the memory at 1066 MHz, you need to set the memory frequency to 533 MHz; you don't need to overclock the FSB. You'll have to change the DRAM frequency from Auto (or DDR2-800 MHz) to DDR2-1066 MHz.

DDR2-1066 MHz usually is DDR2-800 MHz overclocked memory. That's why it requires more voltage (2.0V-2.1V) instead of 1.8V and looser timings.

You can check what's eating memory with Vista in Task Manager. What percentage of your memory is being used (cache is excluded as Vista uses most available memory for caching). As an example, I have a system with 8 GB of memory. Memory utilization is 68 %; therefore I know that the system uses approximately 5.4 GB of memory.

ok.my cpu bus speed is only 800 mhz :(.
in bios,on the mem options it gives me up to 800 mhz,if i want to go over 800 i would need to change the FSB wich originally is 200,and then it give me more options,i d like to post a pic of my bios, now i got it working at 860 mhz, its only 8% o.c but i think i could get it to work at 533 mhz as u said. just let me play with it and il get back to you.
i just need to watch because i dont have any liquid cooling.and im scared!

I just don't understand why you need to increase the FSB on that motherboard to run faster memory. Doesn't it have a setting that you can change from Auto to Manual? Even on my old P5W DH Deluxe, if I change A.I. Overclocking from Auto to Manual, additional menu options are available and it lets me choose DRAM frequencies up to DDR2-1067 MHz.

It is not 1066 memory even though it's sold as if it were. Most memory sold over DDR2 800 (and even some at 800) is just guaranteed by the manufacturer to overclock to those specs. The true speed of DDR2 is what it's capable of running at 1.8v.

These are true DDR2 1066

Originally there were only DDR2 400, 533, 667 and 800. Since then they've added 1066 but the JEDEC specification for all DDR2 is 1.8v. I find it funny that so few people know what the voltage is supposed to be that they advertise "Ultra Low Voltage" when it's running at the standard. Standard voltage for DDR3 is 1.5v.
