I'm gonna be having a complete new build very soon. I'm seriously looking at the 4870x2. I'm running a Samsung 22" monitor @1680x1050. I know the 4870x2 is a bit overkill for that res but I won't be upgrading for around 3 more years after this so it's got to last.
Any personal opinions especially from current 4870x2 owners will be very welcome. Is it performing as you'd hoped etc? Any problems you've encountered?
The OP stated that this would be for a completely new build.
I have to say, I have a 4870x2, and I love it. It can almost pull 1920x1200, 4xAA on Crysis on Very High, and it can definitely run the same settings (including AA) in Crysis quite smoothly at 1680x1050. All other games are beautifully smooth fully cranked, and I can't say I have any complaints.
Now, as for 16xAA? The performance hit for 16x is pretty big, so I wouldn't count on it in anything more demanding than HL2 Ep. 2 or so, but 8x is easily doable in basically everything but Crysis.

Many thanks for that although in your sig it's saying you're running an i7 965 so I guess the performance will be pretty special. I can only afford the i7 920 although I will be buying a cooler and maybe oc to 3.2Ghz.
The 4870x2 is a beast of a card and it will handle most anything that you throw at it. While minimal AA/AF adjustments you should be able to run everything out there at that resolution.
Which OEM are you going to buy from? Any preference?

920 and 965 can overclock to very nearly the same speed... there's not much reason to get anything other than the 920, really. The 940 is in an even worse position than the 965, imho, it's absolutely worthless.
I have a HD 4870X2 with my rig and first i had a 22" monitor with 1680x1050 resolution and it handled every game out there with max settings and now i have a 24" monitor with 1920x1200 resolution and i can still max out every game I am very happy with the way it performs

Hey EQPlayer, how is that quad fire working out for you?
I already have a 4870 1Gb and I am thinking of buying a hd4870 x2 in couple of months so I'll have tri-fire setup.
Do you know of any good quad fire or tri-fire benchmarks out there?
tri fire would do better than quad fire, theres a thread created by the user annisman, if you check a couple of pages back he compares 4870 X2 with 3 way 4870s (4870 X2 + 4870 1 gig).
Main thing I want to see is 4870 1 gig x's 3 vs 4870 X2 + 4870 1 gig.
Most review sites prefer using 4 4870s rather than 4870 X2 quads, since it does tend to get higher frames.

Yeah, HD 4870X2 CrossFireX doesnt scale very well,i hope AMD will make better drivers for it soon.
