An error occurred while receiving the fax

I have my xp fax set up and can happily send and receive faxes within the UK. I think I have gotten one through to a corrrespondent in France but since sending it I have been getting repeated efforts to receive a fax on my PC with all the associated messages and noises but always terminating with the error message: an error occurred while receiving the fax. I should be grateful for advice on this please.

It's hard to say what the problem is if the error message is so short. Are you sure that the sender has a properly functioning fax?

is there any error code associated with this error?
