I have an external hard drive that I'm trying to format. I right click on the drive and click on format. The box comes up and I click the start button, then it warns me that it will erase everything on the disk, I click on start button and an error message pops up telling me that windows can't complete the format. It says exFAT in the file system and I can't change this. What should I do?

Well, you can format in NTFS, FAT32, exFAT, etc.
If you want exFAT ((Extended FAT) ,which is faster, I think that requires a microsoft update to work on your XP.

Try this updates from Microsoft for exFAT drives:

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=19364
and this one:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955704

Or you can try FAT 32 formating or NTFS with a downloded utility.

If this still doesn't work, then try this: Go to control panel>administrative tools>computer management, under disk management or removable storage , select your drive, right click it and format.

Let me know if it worked with the updates! :hello:

I'm sorry I'm trying to format to FAT32. none of the download utilitys seem to work (SwissKnife...etc) Is there a better download utility out there? I've tried going into DOS, and it tells me that the volume is to big. I'm trying to put this 500G hard drive on my PS3. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks for your help, but I finaly got SwissKnife to work and the drive is now hooked up to my PS3 and is working fine. Once again thanks for your time and help. Much appreciated!
