Hello, im trying to do some research to see if i can have 8 gigabite memory in my Dell dimension 9200
Chipset..
Intel P965 Dual-channel DDR2 Memory Support Delivers up to 12.8 GB/s of bandwidth and 8 GB memory addressability for faster system responsiveness and support of 64-bit computing
BUT... Dell manual tells max 4 gigabite memory but i was thinking the manual was created long time ago and wasnt tested with 8 gigabite and it might work ?
Probably not. If your specs say 4 gigs, then 4 gigs it is. I know of no bios update that will change the memory capacity. I just updated from 4 to 6 gigs, and noticed no change in performance.
The maximum is 1 GB per socket for a total of 4 GB. None of the memory resellers list modules larger than 1 GB and the maximum speed is DDR2-667 MHz. You want to try 2 GB modules? Make sure that you can return them if they don't work.
It's your money, therefore it's your decision. I'm 99% sure they won't be recognized as 2 GB (and the system might not even boot at all). The issue isn't the chipset, it's the BIOS and components that Dell used. I have an Intel DG965RY based on that chipset and it supports 8 GB of DDR2-667 MHz memory.
