I just put a Seagate momentus 5400RPM ATA HDD 160GB into my laptop and it works good but I was on a car ride and everytime I would sleep the laptop, then wake it up, I would get back on, move the mouse/do work for 5 seconds then completely freeze. No response from mouse, keyboard, or caps lock light. I had to hard restart.

However it has been difficult to reproduce the problem. It has maybe happened 3-4 times in the last 2 weeks. I am going to try putting the old HDD back in for a little and see if it happens at all. I may just RMA this one in the mean time to be safe but I wouldn't mind some input.

I think the weirdest part is how I could operate for a few seconds before lockup.

What laptop are you using? The same happened to my old Inspiron E1505... it seems that model had a static problem that was causing the system instability.

That might not be the case with your laptop, but once we know what it is, maybe we can find the solution together.
