I would recommend a modem + router setup.
Modems provided by internet providers are limited in their configuration and management options.
But they do a great job of providing internet access 
I have always preferred to bridge the modem to a separate router.
A separate router can provide:
1. Better security
2. Much better configuration options
3. Faster network speeds on your LAN ( will not increase your internet speeds).
4. Provides more network ports for LAN use.
