If I spent an extra $85 on my system...

what would be the best bang for my buck? Last week I got some great advice on putting together a system and after settling on everything I need, I wondered would an extra $85 go a long way? Here's what I'm going to buy:

Acer H213H bmid Black 21.5" 5ms HDMI Full HD 1080P Widescreen 16:9 LCD Monitor
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009157

Antec Three Hundred
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129042

LG Black 22X DVD Burner - OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136144

SAPPHIRE 100245L Radeon HD 4850 512MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102770

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound - OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835100007

G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231166

ASUS P5Q Pro LGA 775 Intel P45
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131299

XIGMATEK HDT-S1283 120mm Rifle CPU Cooler
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233003

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 Kentsfield & CORSAIR CMPSU-650TX 650W bundle
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.159752

This all gets to me shipped for $1015

So, since my current monitor is http://support.gateway.com/s/MONITOR/7004220/7004220sp2.shtml anything will be an upgrade. But for an extra $85 should I get any combination of:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 Yorkfield
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115041
+$85 more than the q6600, is it worth it?

Antec NeoPower 650 Blue 650W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817371010
+$10 more than the Cosair

Antec Nine Hundred
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129021&Tpk=antec%20900
+$60 more than the 300

SAPPHIRE 100258-1GL Radeon HD 4850 1GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102802
+$17 more than the 512MB

SAPPHIRE 100259L Radeon HD 4870 512MB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102810
+$45 more than the 4850

Or a different monitor?

Any suggestions are welcome. I also have the hard drives covered, I already have 2. Is that 650w still going to cover these upgrades and a possible second graphics card a few years down the line?

i thought about that buy i didn't think it would be the best way to spend my money. If it's worth it then I'll keep that in mind, thanks!

Well, it depends on what you're doing. All gaming? Want all the eye candy? Mix of gaming and video editing/ multitasking/rendering? If you do more CPU intensive things, then I would probably go w/ the Q9550. However, I believe either CPU can be overclocked to nearly the same point (I could definitely be wrong). If you don't plan on overclocking, then absolutely go for the 9550. If you do all gaming, probably go a gpu route. Just my $.02

since you have a gaming gfx card already Im assuming you want a gaming pc

and if thats the case spend the extra on a 4870 or a gtx 260 . The monitor you have picked is a high resolution and needs more than a 4850 if you want decent frame rates

i wanted to but i didn't want to have to get a cable for it and the good ones i could find were oem. i guess i should just go for it and buy the cable separate.

Just an FYI, the price of that build sure comes close to the price of my i7 build.
Have you considered going the i7 w/ DDR3 route instead? Sure would be a lot more future proof.

lol, well that's not the site, just an html of my current build, as I was getting input from a lot of people along the way. The actual site is a streaming music site I host for myself and my friends.

I would still look VERY close at an I7 build...

Motherboard, CPU, memory (btw almost all I7 mobos come with a couple SATA cables)

You could save a couple dollars going with 2x 2gb for the build now and get another 2gb later.

BTW I have http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009145
It's 22" and I love it. Plus it's a tad cheaper than your 21.5" but yur screen is HDMI, not certain about your reasoning for wanting an HDMI monitor.

I would be willing to bet that you come in under $1100 with an I7. I hate to just spew "I7, I7, I7" but really, I know I would if I had that much to spend.

I am at $957 with no case, power supply, or DVD burner; this includes shipping and 6gb of memory (heck I didn't even choose the cheapest components, except for the least expensive CPU). At this point I would be using an old case and getting a $70 power supply to go with this build and have one helluva system. In fact, if I had to buy a case I would get a cheap one and toss a few fans in it.

BTW going by your build you did not mention Hard Drive - I assume you are re-using an old one?

Just added DVD burner ($20) and Antec 650W power supply ($79)

Total is $1058 shipped. No case or hard drive in this price. Like I said, I would take a serious look if I had $1100 to spend, but hey either way you will have a nice system.

thanks for the reply. i noticed that 22" monitor earlier and i think i'm going to go that way instead. It's a little lower in resolution and i don't need hdmi anyways. have you put your system into a wishlist? if so, post the link!!!

Slightly lower resolution wont need *as much* GPU to run it either. I am using a 9800gt and a Q6600 (mild overclock to 3.0ghz), with that exact monitor and it runs everything I can throw at it. There are some games that I turn off AA but I don't mind, not even a little bit.

Ill put together a wish list later on this evening.

i've seen a few posts where people say to get 1.8volt ram. what's the advantage over 2.0volt ram?

I must have picked at least 1 different item from my original post cuz the total is a little different.

Total shipped to my house is $1,063.45

There is a total of $35 to have back in mail in rebates as well.

This is no Hard Drive or Case in this build. If I had $1100 to spend this is probably what I would buy, re-use my hard drive(s) and case. In fact I would re-use pretty much everything and just buy mobo, ram, cpu, and a better graphics card, but I digress......

1.8v RAM will ensure 100% compatibility, though you may want to watch out for Off-Brand memory; if it absolutely has to work I recommend Kingston, I've never had a compatibility or RMA issue with Kingston. BTW My RAM runs @ 1066mhz and it requires 2.0v to get there. But if I clock it back to 800mhz it only needs 1.8v.

Thanks dude for the insight. i think i've decided to stay with the q6600 though, but thanks for the help!

Also last question for anyone who can answer it, is there any reason these wouldn't work together?:

I saw a lot of people recommending Gigabyte and this board supports more RAM then the p5q Pro
