nope. don't know what you heard. also the 4870 has a higher core clock and it uses GDDR5 memory which is a lot faster. GDDR5 is quad pumped, meaning it can transfer 4 bits of data per cycle compared to the 2 of GDDR3. so GDDR5 would be about equal in terms of performance to GDDR3 memory clocked twice as high. the 4870 also has a better cooler. my 4850 reference cooler is terrible. i'm going to have to change it soon. it goes up to 100C after extended use.

Mine was doing that too until I blew it out with air to clean the dust buildup. Was actually hitting 118 no joke but still managed to hold its overclock. Then I modified the bios to tweak the fan speeds. Now it doesn't go over 80C and it is quiet when it needs to be.

The new CCC allows you to manually set the fan. With mine at 55% it is barely audible and it keeps temps at 40C idle and 76C max. If yours doesn't cool like that, try cleaning it. If still no luck, either it could have been assembled incorrectly or it could have a miscalibrated temp probe or you could have bad case airflow.
