Does it mention requiring a soundcard in the speakers information?

no, and having a sound card will be a waste of money, as the speakers will competely by pass them, it has it's own controller and sound adapter. There is no direct way of getting preprocessed audio from USB, it has to be a audio devide at the other end.

The quality of USB sound adapters varries from really quiet good to dreadful.
