What is a reasonable number of startup items? Is it
advisable to revert to "Selective Startup" as opposed to
the "Normal Startup" setup effective with a new PC?
Also, what effect does the "Services" checked items have
on the PC performance?

1. The usual setting should be "Normal Startup". If you disabled some
items in MSCONFIG you should decide whether you still need them or not
and then re-enable or delete the entries.
2. Services have the same effect as other applications that start with
Windows: they slow down the process a bit. Usually you will not notice
any difference just when you disable some services. However for to
have a clean system you may want to disable those Services that you do
not need.
