The optical drive CD R/W DVD ROM failed. On installing a new Sony Optiarc CD/DVD+/R/W the BIOS will not recognise the drive and shows only the existing hard drive. Can the BIOS be updated so it recognises the drive or is the laptop too old?

I have 2 of these laptops.

What version of the BIOS are you running?
Version 2.60 is the latest version that I have found and am using.

If 2.60 does not work and you still want to use the laptop then you could use a USB external CD/DVD drive or look out for someone selling the laptop for spares on an auction site.
