Upgrading Advice (1440x900 + 4850) -> (1920x1200 + ?)

Hi Everyone...

----
I'm upgrading and looking for advice on a video card. I have already browsed these forums and looked at Tom's guide (Feb) for video cards. I'm just looking for your opinion and/or personal experiences with these parts.
----

Short Version:

This is mostly a question over whether an HD4850 X2 or a GTX 280/285 would work better with a 24in 1920x1200 monitor. Here is my list of priorities from highest to lowest: Price > Performance > Reliability (probably no [o/c]ing) > Other Issues (Drivers, Waiting for game updates) > Noise. I do play mid/high graphics demanding games from time to time and the most important issue for me is that my new setup is just as fast as, or faster than, my old setup. I have a 19in 1440x900 monitor with an HD4850 and I'll be upgrading to a 24in 1920x1200 monitor. I would like to stay under $300 for a graphics card, but I can spend a little extra if absolutely necessary.

----

Longer version:

I just built a new system last year, but since I have a little extra money, I'm going to upgrade a few parts. Here is an overview of my system:

Mobo: P5Q Pro (2 16x slots)
CPU: Q9450
Ram: 4GB PC6400
Future Power Supply: Corsair 750TX
Future Monitor: Samsung T240HD (and yes, I want it to be able to double as a TV)

The only things that I would want an opinion on are the power supply and the monitor (I know it's the wrong forum, but I'll take the advice here if you have it).

Crysis is probably the most demanding game I play (in the genre: FarCry 2, HL2, etc...) and so I just tested it on my computer at 1440x900 High Settings (with physics, volumetric and game effects on very high) with 0x AA and it varied from ~22-42 FPS with average FPS being in the lower 30s. I would like to average high 30s - low 40s min for the game, but I'll take the level I have now. There are varying reports on how my tentative first choice for a video card, the 4850 X2, would handle the game. It appears to be generally faster than the 280, but another review shows the 285 edging it out in Crysis (contradicted by this comparison), though the 4850 X2 still appeared to be the slightly faster in most games, including FarCry 2.

Here are the main questions:

1) Which card, either among the listed ones or other cards, would best deliver according to the criteria of (generally in order from highest to lowest): Price > Performance > Reliability > Other Issues > Noise

2) Is the HD4850 X2 really THAT noisy, compared to my current HD 4850?

3) Would the new setup deliver similar or better performance in games than the current one?

4) I can find find the HD4850 X2 for $275, so is it worth it to buy the GTX 280 for $335 GTX 285 for $350?

i would get neither of those. get a 4870 512mb. prices are dropping on those to 149$. expect them to be reflected on etailers within this week/early next. they would handle all your games without a sweat at 1920x1200, except for crysis.

but in terms of price/performance/reliability/other issues/noise, there's nothing nvidia has right now that could match the 4870 at 149$.

That would be great. It that is the case, it looks like 2 4870s could be crossfired for ~$300. I wonder if the price of the 4870 X2 will drop to similar levels...

honestly you would probably be fine with just the 4850. i'm using a 4850 with my 24" monitor and the performance is fine.

Do n`t worry about the psu, it`s on ATIs certified list for crossfiring hd4870 and a single hd4870X2!
Great choice for a monitor.
Why not CF another 4850? You`ll have the performance of the 4850X2 without the noise/size/cooling issues.

Two other considerations while we're at it:

1) It's rumored that ATI will be coming out with a new HD4890 in April. It's supposed to be "25-30% faster" than the 4870 and cost about $300. That price is at the higher end of what I want to spend, but it is doable. I don't know 25-30% faster means it would run better than two 4850s though.

2) I just looked up my mobo (P5Q Pro P45) again and noticed something in the specs: "2 x PCI Express 2.0 x16 slots, supports ATI CrossFireX technology at x8 link (black at max. x8 link)" (Yes?). Would this be a good reason to stick with a single card, or that not noticeably affect performance?

----

I think it's a great card, and I hear the single gpu argument used often, but from the benches I've seen of the games I'll likely play (links in original post), the 4850X2 runs even with or slightly faster than the 285 for around $75 cheaper. I see people talking about drivers/support/compatibility issues, but most bench results seem to suggest that the listed issues are not really a problem.

----

It looks like the 4850 would do a good job running most things, but I just don't want to take the performance hit of going from 1440x900 to 1920x1200 and keeping the same card (now if it was a 4870x2/295...). In some games (read: crysis), the card seems close to its optimum limit.

----

Thanks - that's good to hear... I think it was one of the only affordable monitors in that price/size range that would work as a TV, so it's nice to see that it looks like a fairly good quality monitor too.

It's a good idea. I just checked prices on newegg and the 4870 512MB is only $20 more than the 4850 512MB...if the 8x mobo limitation would be insignificant in terms of performance, that might be great option for a low $300s solution.

Also, you can crossfire a 4850 with any other 4800 series card or x2 card...
(check out ati's website under the crossfire section for a compatability chart.
Use what you have and buy one more... (of anything! I would recommend the 4870 1gb version.)
And the dual 8x doesn't really affect performance...
Thats just my two cents.

Thanks for the advice - that's good to know. For now, I've decided to sell my 4850 to a friend who needs a video card in order to raise the money for a 4870X2 (it would be close to the same price as adding a 4870 1GB to the current setup). I may explore Xfire solutions in the future depending on the price and performance of new cards.

Upto 1920x1200 a single 4850 could handle well... but a 4870 would be much better choice.. I don't know if dual cards are required for that resolution... why go to dual if single could handle it better...

Ok i just read the long version and with the settings you are talking about the 4870 1gb is definatly where i would be looking. Your 4850 would run your games at reduced settings while you saved up for the 4870 if need be.
But with the res and details you have listed i really think that 1gb of Ram whichever card you choose is a must.

noot sure if you've purchased yet but the gigabyte factory overclocked 1GB version can run crysis smoothly @3200x1024 on very high!!! and so far haven't found a game to max it out completly (yet it runs a little hot @ 92 load but when they cop it at 120+ who cares)

ps: fan is absolutly silent, cpu fan makes more noise and its rated @22 decibels
