Is it possible for someone to send you a virus that erases your bios or destroys some hardware on your computer?

It's possible to erase the BIOS since software to do it already exists, but I can't figure out how a virus could destroy hardware (erasing hard disk info or an unprotected BIOS isn't hardware destruction).
