I'm about to order some parts to build my new i7 rig from Newegg. I here people say that you should wait about six months for the prices to go down. and of course thats a good idea, but by then new parts will be out and your going to spend the same amount of money because of the newer parts. But before I do, I would like to know. What did you put in your rig and what would you have done differently?

The list:

Antec Twelve hundred ATX Full Tower

Intel Core i7 920 Nehalem 2.66 GHz Chip

Gigabyte GA-EX58-Extreme LGA 1366 Intel X58 motherboard

Corsair Dominator 6GB (3x2GB) 240 pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600

EVGA GeForce GTX 285 SSC Edition 1GB 512-bit GDDR3 Card

Lite-on 22X DVD R DVD burner with LightScribe Blace IDE ( Not looking for Blue-Ray player for PC yet. Besides it looks better on 50" )

Western Digital Caviar SE16 640 GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0 GB/s Hard Drive

Acer H213H bmid Black 21.5" 5ms HDMI Full HD 1080P Widescreen LCD Monitor max res. 1920X1080

Corsair 1000HX 1000W PSU

Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound

Thermaltake V1 Max-Performance CPU Cooler with Massive 110mm Blue LED Full Range Variable Speed Fan

That's it.

Thanks.

You won't need a 1000w PSU for that setup. You will be fine with a quality 750w model like the corsair or the PC P&C. I *think* that the gtx 285 is overkill for a 22" monitor, so I would consider either downgrading the GPU slightly or upgrade to a 24" monitor (better option IMO).

Also, upgrade the WD drive to the black version...it's faster and I believe only $5 more.

I also would recommend not going w/ the extreme MOBO. You could save some money by going with the P6T deluxe or the EVGA. Either will handle all of your overclocking needs.

+1 Fooly

Definetly go asus for Mobo...I am

Go WD!!! Good case. I went w/ the Cooler Master HAF 932. Check this link.

I'm in love w/ it. Agree on the overkill. I'm going for a 24" myself.

Dude. DO NOT GO WITH A LITE-ON!!! THEY ARE GARBAGE. Not long life expectancy on the Laser. I have had 2 and hated the f'n things. I have an Lg X22 and it works grand plus the Dl writing speed is high.

i would definitely go SSD or Velociraptor drives and go with either a gtx260 216 or a 4870 1GB. why is it so easy to spend other peoples money? lol

That V1 cooler isn't very good, only thing it has going for it is its smaller than some other i7 coolers so it will fit in smaller cases, but you are sacrifcing function for form and in the Antec 1200, you can fit a TRUE easily which is the best CPU cooler on the market currently. And don't get Silver 5, get MX-2 it conducts heat as well or better and is non-electicity conductive so it wont fry your mobo if you accidentally spill.

Unless you are made of money and it is no object to you, do not get SSD's. If you got two of those WD Caviar Black drives and ran them Raid 0, you would get the same speed as an SSD and much much more space for less cash (but just one of those drives alone is pretty fast and Raid 0 is not necessary, if you did do Raid 0 I would recommend getting a third to have one as a backup data drive).

Get a SATA dvd drive, not IDE.

I also think that Corsair ram is overpriced, look at OCZ platinum 1600. They have better timings and are cheaper. The fancy heatspreaders of the dominators isn't as necessary for the ram that i7's use because they don't get as hot, due to their lower voltages.

What are you talking about? The Gigabyte x58 extreme will definitely support DDR3-1600. My P6T allows me to use up to 2000. You just have to change the multiplier to make it the right speed.

Thanks for the inputs. I will be checking on a good 24" monitor. I was thinking of getting the 1000W PSU just in case I decide to get 2 GTX-285's. And the motherboard. The Gigabyte seems to have highest reviews. But motherboard are never a easy choice.
