Ide vs sata

How can I determine what the drive type is of my internal DVD-ROM? its in a Dell 8400 series desktop.

well, I googled the manual, apparently your motherboard supports both. Can you see the name under device manager? Or open the chasis, see if it's a wide ribbon cable attached to it or one that looks like a SATA cable (google images can help you here)
