I gave myself a budget of $1000 and with the current build it comes to $1070 including shipping and some extra parts: 2 dvd burners instead of 1 as I feel having 2 drives just makes it easier and only $5 more for a dvd burner as apposed to a dvd reader. Wireless card is included too and just some good old arctic thermal 5 paste.

Go for batuchka's build, with a HD 4870 X2.

The Antec 650W is OK for that build. Sapphire's recommendation for its 4870X2 is 650W with a 6-pin and an 8-pin connector, and that PSU does all that. OK, it's good to have some extra room, but you'd lose the combo.

I don't think you really need two burners. How many times are you going to copy directly from one DVD to another? Even then, if you read the source disk and put it on the HDD first, and then use the same drive for writing, you have a lower chance of ruining a blank DVD.

I'm also building a +- 1000 dollar build, but I'm going with Phenom II. I don't want to promote Phenom II here but I figured it would be a better choice then the Q6600 which will be EOL very soon, while PII is "fresh".

Just saying though.

Hey batuchka,
I like your build but I am trying to go with an intel processor, think you could recommend a build with intel? I have had an amd previously and would like to go with intel this time round.
Thanks for your input.

The Phenom ll is a viable alternative now .

are from an article about AMD's next processor but check the performance charts for gaming . The P ll 940 is a very good quad core for gaming systems .

After getting rid of one dvd drive and bundling the Q9550 and the psu it came to 1123 with shipping which is a little more than I wanted, but in the end may be better. Now any reason for the HDT-S1282 over the Freezer 7? They are the same price at the moment. I like your idea. Thanks

Nope check the gaming benches for enthusiast settings/resolution you not getting more frames and reviewers have also commented smoother gameplay on these new Phenom 2s! Good call on the HD4870X2 hehe

Quote:

Compared directly to the Q9550, the Phenom II X4 940 is a strong competitor. It had better average frame rates in CrossFire mode than the Q9550 in three titles, tied in one, and finished behind the Q9550 by about 2%~7% in the other three games.

When it came to actual game play experiences, we thought the Phenom II 940 was clearly the better choice in Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts and Crysis Warhead due to minimum frame rate advantages and fluidity of game play. In the five other titles, we could not tell any real differences in the quality of game play between the Phenom II 940 and Core 2 Quad Q9550

People have gotten 3.5-3.7 with fine temps (some via software!) load for these P2 X4 940BE on the stock HSF/ stock volts and check out stock HSF OCing on Q9550:

Remember: an after market HSF is not free :p

Note to anyone posting that Xigmtek....don't forget to include the retention bracket in your build.. That cooler is huge, and to not use that retention bracket with that heatsinkis not such a good thing.

To OP...if you don't plan on clocking the dogcrap out of your cpu, no need to spend alot of money on a HS. You can get buy with alot cheaper....and still get a decent aftermarket HS. Take that E8400...move up your FSB to 9x400= 3.6Ghz for a 1600fsb and let the fun begin....You just went from 13333 to 1600fsb withouth cranking up your voltage to where it's going to burn up your cpu...not to mention that slight little overclock will have that cpu eating up the AMD and spitting it out. :)
