As the title says...P4 or Core 2 Duo?
I have 2 PCs, one with P4 and the other one with E4500. What is the best one for gaming? I'm talking only about the CPU...the other components are almost the same.
Thanks!

Actually...

Stock speed: C2D
Overclocked: More C2D

The Core 2 architecture is far ahead of the Pentium architecture - so much so in fact that a 3.73GHz P4 is easily beaten by a 2.4GHz C2D in almost everything. Get the Core 2.

Thanks a lot!
Ok...so even if C2D has less speed, it will perform better than P4 because of it's architecture?

The Core2 beats out P4 mainly because of the fact that Core2 CPUs actually have 2 cores, whereas a P4 even touted as "Dual-Core" is in fact, a single-core CPU that tricks the OS into thinking that it has 2 cores. My girlfriend's new computer that I built has a 2.8GHz Core2, and I have a P4 Dual-Core 3.2GHz (OC to 3.5GHz), and hers beats mine every step of the way. Gaming, Vista rating, everything.

Of course, you could spend an extra $50 or so and get a Core2 Quad, same idea as the P4 as it tricks the OS into thinking it has more cores, but this time it thinks it has 4 instead of 2 :p

cjl is correct on this one, since the Core 2 architechure is faster and newer than the PD 641 that chip should perform better.

Disable one core on a core2, and the core2, clock for clock, is still faster. Of course, since your not doing that, the core2 will simply own.

WRONG! A core 2 quad h as four physical processors on die.

^ He is comparing the Core 2 DUO E4500, not Core 2 Quad.
