Sorry for the double post ( In the Homebuild system forum ) but I recon after reading through my post that it really should have been posted here.

Well, its that time again. I have just bought Empire Total War, and happy as a lark I start playing. But the framerate is awfull with some decent settings on. So you can safely say that I am not satisfied with how my rig is handling the game at all, and that I need to upgrade a bit.

This time I am considering just going for a graphics upgrade though, and wait a while before I do something else to the rig.

My current rig is as follows:

Asus GeForce 8800GT 512MB GDDR3 600 MHZ
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
Asus P5N-E SLI, nForce-650i SLI, ATX
Corsair TWIN2X 6400 DDR2, 4096MB CL5
Thermaltake Toughpower 850W

I used to have two of the mentioned GPU's, but I had so many issues with the sli system, that I just tossed one out.

Now what I want to ask you guys that are much more savy then me in these issues is if this rig can last a bit longer with a new gpu, or should I just start saving up now for a whole new rig ?

I am considering buying http://hothardware.com/Articles/XF [...] on/?page=1, or a saphire 4870.

What do you guys think ?

Thank you in advance :D

Which driver are you using ?
Try rolling back to previous version say 182.06.
That system should run the game fine at medium resolutions. And because it doesn't support quad cores, you can try overclocking cpu.

Well, its not only that game. Dawn of War 2, Farcry 2 etc are not giving me the fps that I crave :P

Then get a graphics card to the likes of GTX280.
Try overclocking you cpu to 2.8-3 ghz. You may be lured by the developments around but I absolutely don't see the need to upgrade from that system unless you're an enthusiast. The best you could do is to get a p43/p45 motherboard and say good cpu cooler and push you cpu beyong 3ghz. And surely 8800gt may not cut it if you're trying to play at say 19x12 or 16x12 at max.

Your link is broken:(
The only thing that could do with an update is the 8800, the rest of your system is fine.
Check out the overclocking Forum on how to get a bit more out of the Quad and drop in either; a GTX260 (216) and 55nm if you can find it, or a 1Gb HD4870. The new GTX 260 is a little faster than the HD4870 BTW.

That is a great card and would serve you well. What resolution are you trying to play at?

I play at 1920 * 1200. I dont care so much about jaggies when I play at that resolution. But I always put textures etc to the highest settings when I play.

Here`s the card you linked to:

And something a little less expensive:

It`s up to you; is the XFX longer warranty and overclock worth the extra?
