What is your own language GP? I always assumed you were a native English
speaker.

And me speaking my native tongue English semi OK and my ancestral tongue
(German) like a drunk tourist! I had to ask didn't I!?

All of which doesn't tell me what comes before English - maybe you just
don't want to tell us - fair enough.

Hehe, thanks, but you know... that's just how it is over here. In the
US you obviously get by with just english, though some, especially in
the south, also take spanish. Here in norway we're bilingual by law,
plus we learn english from the third grade, german, french or spanish
from the eight, and we pretty much understand swedish and danish
because we've been ruled by both for centuries, and they demanded we
talk to them in their language... so there ya go :)

I know. I wish we had had a better attitude towards languages. It gets
worse with budget cuts because languages are the first to go.

I've always wanted Latin, but never been to a school that offered it.
When I lived in Ohio, that was started in 10th grade- I moved in 9th.
Where I had signed up for German that year, but they cut German so I was
put in French. In my new school, they had cut French and put me into
Spanish.

So I can say a few things in French, which I did get to use once in
France- I went with my friend from NYC and she damn near assaulted
people asking if they spoke English so she could ask questions. I
trailed in her wake, repeating, "Perdonez, s'il vous plait... elle est
Americaine."

My Spanish is ruder. I learned the insulting things, and how to respond
if they ask me if I take drugs. Tomas drugas? Nothing really useful, and
I'm only fluent in English. At least I can read Middle and Old too.

Hey! I was enjoying being impressed!

Over here I took Mandarin in grade 3 (and don't even remember the
translation of my name).
Indonesian in grades 8 & 9 and about all I remember is 'tas pensil' -
'pencil case'.
I can follow a little Papuan pidgin, because it's what my parents used to
speak when they didn't want us kids to understand 'dis pella here him name
lik lik pella marie' - 'My name is little white girl' (which is what it was
when we were over there) - but it's almost english anyway.
And the best you can say for my German is that I manage to speak it with a
50 year old Berlin accent, because that's what my mother and Oma have when
they speak German.

This really made me laugh - it's just the picture of you shambling along
behind looking humiliated. Yes, Latin. I would have liked to take that
further but it became unfashionable to do it and it was withdrawn from our
school. I'm English and speak four languages - English (obviously), French
(quite) well, German (extremely rusty - I have no chance to practice) and a
little Italian - lovely language. But it's too easy if you're an English
speaker - because even when you're in quite a wild country, there's nearly
always someone around who can speak it. I think it discourages us from
learning other languages which is a shame. And practically everyone on the
continent (Europe) speaks middling to excellent English as far as I can
tell. A compliment to our Romance- and Germanic-speaking friends, I think.

Best wishes

Indeed, lol. It's funny how sami is an official language too, when
there are so few of them, and they understand norwegian perfectly.
It's a pain in the ass for public offices who have to hire people who
understand sami to accept their various forms and documents.

take and upload pics.

I guess it was easier in the old days when I was a kid. We were taught
that Norway had only one language and those who said there were others
should not be taken seriously. No-one who lived south of Trondheim
were to be taken seriously either no matter what they said. We didn't
learn English or any other foreign language at school either. If
foreigners spoke another language it was their problem not ours.
Education was not taken seriously either as you had two choices when
you grew up, get a job as a fisherman or get no job at all. I chose
the latter. I learned a few English words from a dictionary and that's
all the education I have:)

That wouldn't have helped me much, Usenet wasn't invented then. A few
had a radio and even a telephone.
