get a BFG Tech geforce 8800gts 512mb OC. i think it will outperform 9800gt 1gb ddr3

yeah i think your right the bechmarks show it's faster then the 9800gt and close to the 9800gtx, the 9800gts is faster by about 9 fps or so, it's sad you would think that the 9800 would be faster but it's not

8800gts. But in my opinion for 20$ more you could get a 4850 which is much faster. seems like a better deal if you have the extra cash.

This. Skip the older gen cards and at get something semi current. That 9xxx series chip is quite old and the extra few bucks into a 4850 would be worth it on both the performance and future proofing front.

Unless it's a 9800GTX/GTX+, in that case it performs just as good as the 4850. (performs better than the 4850 in most situations if the AA isn't turned up a lot)

i hate ati cards i stay away from them all much as i could, there drivers sucks no matter what, all friends who had ati all have the same probs, and the 4850 is about as fas at the 9600gt my friend has that one

I am curious what kind of computer do you have? I am not sure you need a 8800 even? Because all of this extra power may be worthless? Its hard to compare a 9600 and a 4850 because if they are in comparable computers the 4850 would win. But if your friend with the 9600 has a good computer, and your friend with the 4850 has a shitty one, well that would explain it.
