Yes, a quad core should go in this system since you want to do animation, just like dragonsprayer said you want like a Core i7, C2Q, or Phenom II X4 something like those. For RAM i like Crucial or Corsair, but there are alot of other good RAM companies : Geil, G.SKILL, OCZ brands like that. You'll also need a nice quality power suply something like from Corsair, Antec, SeaSonic, PC-Power Cooling, sometimes FSP.

hi since u want to do animations and stuffs....i recommend my latest pc config..i have an i7 system..and it has much performance differences ..so here are the specs:
processor: intel i7 920 [ u will find little difference in rendering still images..but for movie renderings ull find vast difference...i get almost 5 to 10 mins boost for each frame..so u can calculate if am rendering 600 images alltogether]
motherboard : asus p6t delux [better than intel mobo..trust me..i have experience in intel mobos...asus are rock solid...]
ram : kingston 2gb 800 hhz/1200mhz * 2
atx cabinet : coolermaster [cabinet model :"elite" will be cheap around 2300INR] and get seperate coolermaster 650 watts smps
lg dvd writer : yes better than sony dvd drives...
graphic card : u can go for nvidia 9800gt 512mb.. from XFX brand
