CPU is not getting hot, AT ALL

hey everyone,,

hours ago I installed my new desktop, here is a list of the components:

• CPU: Core i7 920 2.66GHz
• Motherboard: GIGABYTE EX58-UD4P
• VGA: Sapphire Radeon HD 4870 1GB
• RAM: OCZ 2GBx3 1600 MHz
• PSU: COOLMAX RM-850B 850WATT
• H.D.D: WD 1TB

guess that's all i need to list, note that the CPU, and VGA are both using their stock cooler,,

now, after I installed everything, everything worked just fine, and i was about to install my Windows Vista 32 bit, cuz i still didn't receive my copy of the 64Bit version..
anyway, when the machine booted the DVD and started copying the drivers preparing for the installation, the power went down in my house ( GOOD TIMING >.> ),

minutes later the power is back, and i turned on the computer, everything looked normal at first, like first three seconds, I waited for the screen to work, nothing came up, no picture, nothing.. waited more and still nothing.

I tried everything, i removed and reinstalled the CPU, the VGA, the RAM, my SATA and IDE cables and even the battery, and still nothing. Unlike before, now there are three red lights coming from the VGA, i didn't notice them before, so I don't know if it's normal or not,,

what's bothering me the most, is that I let the computer on the whole night, just to make sure of something, and yeah, the CPU heatsink is as cold as it was never been used before.

what wrong has possible went during all this ? it's not like its my first time to install a new system, but this has never happened to me before..


any ideas ?

Does the system POST?
Do you have any kind of beeps?
What works and what doesn't?

What kind of PSU? Need more than "forgot the company's name, but it was guaranteed by the store ...".

Lightning strike cause the power outage?? Do you have surge protection?

Can you boot to cd and format/reload windows?

Smell anything unusual when you put your nose to the back of the power supply?

So, just out of curiosity, did you try replacing only the PSU first, before going ahead and replacing the motherboard?

I take it now you will invest in battery backup/surge protection?

Be sure to surge protect your power AND your cable connection (assuming you will connect your comp to cable(TV)). Surges are not fun and you are lucky you got off with as little damage as you did. Believe it or not, a surge protector is one of the cheapest but most important parts of your system.
