PC will not boot OS after hitting sleep button instead of shutdown!

Hi all - built my new system and everything running ok for a month now, just had initial problem with fsb which I reduced to 200 in bios. Accidentally hit Sleep button instead of Shutdown like I usually do - now my system won't boot up - no mouse, keyboard or monitor. PC boots ok initially, then stops, reboots but does not give me OS - black screen. Have been doing a lot of research but am confused and do not know what to do.Here sre the specs:

Asus P5Q-Pro
800w psu
4gb ram
q6660 cpu
nvidia 9800 gt graphics

It's been 24 hours - have tried all sorts and still the same - Help!!!!!!!!!!!

I could use a bit more info there. Are you able to access your BIOS settings?

Your FSB should be set to 266 and multiplier should be 9. Everything else should be on auto, except perhaps for the RAM.

You need to list full specs. Brand and model of RAM. Brand and model of PSU

OCZ makes many 2x2GB kits, and they have different voltage requirements.

This happened when you hit sleep, so I'm guessing your Kingwin PSU did something it shouldn't have. It's not a brand we would recommend here.

It also could just be a failed board.

Pretend you just built it and follow this checklist:

Strip it down, see if you can get anything.

everything was running ok for about 6 weeks - had no problems other than having to lower fsb. Have followed suggested checklist and all seems fine and correctly in place. went with Kingwin due to limited budget - this is my first build and I followed everything exactly in all the manuals. I will work on it for a few more hours but am baffled totally as to what happened!!

Did you test each stick of RAM by itself?

Perhaps you could at least take the RAM somewhere and put it in another machine?

Something failed, and you'll have to swap out parts to figure it out. If that's not an option, then RMA'ing the motherboard is probably the best solution to start.

do you think the RAM might have suddenly failed? I am not able to test the RAM - my back-up pc has different Ram specs. Like I say building my first machine was one thing and I was amazed that there few glitches. Should I take it all apart and begin again? Or maybe I should just take it to a the pc shop - delved back into the MB manual and it suggests resetting the CMOS in the BIOS but I can't get anything on the monitor. I'll keep tring to work it out but I think you are right about RMA'ing the motherboard

It's less likely that both sticks failed at once, that's why I mentioned starting with the motherboard.

I had the same problem with the Sleep function on an overclock. Just reset the BIOS and redid my overclock, then I never used sleep again =P

In fact those exact results are repeatable with my system. If I overclock and try to go into sleep mode, the computer Borks itself. I don't really care why, all is stable and the world is right if I don't use sleep mode.

This was Vista64 as well oddly enough, which I got sick of and reinstalled XP. XP has intermittent problems with Standby mode as well but it doesn't make my computer go haywire when it fails to come out of standby.

pleased to report that after resetting the BIOS (had to remove battery first so that I could get back on monitor) Disabled Sleep in Vista power management but not sure how to do so in BIOS. Looks like everything is reset to deafult - have not dared to overclock yet but would like to - need to work out the values.

Three weeks down the line and my computer suddenly stopped and would not re-boot - I had it running for 48 hours due to downloads!! Had to remove battery and restart system. Wondering why this is happening? My CPU is set to 266 and my ration is 7 - am worried that these crashes will re-occur !!

At this time I really have no clue. It would seem to make sense that perhaps a single component is glitched in some small way.

Since we are talking about weeks in between the problem reoccurring, this makes it very difficult to diagnose.

Did you ever overclock by a substantial amount? Perhaps a large voltage increase make have volted the CPU a bit or something... Was the CPU new when you got it or was this a used processor?

This is my first build and all components were new. I have not overclocked the system at all - in the BIOS all are AUTO. Built the system mainly for Flight Simuator - using AI Suite so that I can monitor temps - average temps = CPU 24 and System 30 - whwn I play the game the temps are 30 and 40 respectively. If removing the battery each time clears the RAM then I am thinking it must be to do with that?

Removing the bios battery just resets the bios back to stock settings. Give me the exact (and full) model number for your motherboard. I'll look at the manual and see if there are any funky settings that may be having an impact on this issue.

In fact give the full specs for all your hardware. Please be specific.

For the past three days this problem is constant and re-occurring - pc keeps shutting down after a few minutes on OS then won't/can't re-boot. Replaced CMOS battery - problem still happening. Added new chassis fan thinking the system must be overheating - problem worsened with each re-boot lasting only minutes. Have reverted to old xp system but am really in despair at the unstabilty of my new build - it's gotta be the MB !!!!!!!!!!!

I don't see where you ever tested the RAM as suggested by Proximon. You really should manually set the RAM timings/voltage to the manufacturers specs in the BIOS and run memtest86+ overnight to test for RAM errors.

I recommend that you test all components separate of one another. Of course this only works if you have a different system that will accept your components. Otherwise you will be guessing.
