Does anybody in the know.. know if the 'Philips' DirecTV Tivo Model 704 will
ever have a software upgrade to version 4.1.x.x to allow for the media
options and future option of backing up programs to a PC with out having to
'CRACK OPEN THE CASE' and "HACKING" the system?

I don't know if that is a Series 1 or Series 2 so my answer may not apply,
but:
It is DirecTV that is holding back the software upgrades and they are not
saying if the HMO option will ever be available to us. You might want to
check out http://www.dealdatabase.com/forum/ if you are feeling adventurous.
(It will involve a lot of reading.)

Nobody that has any inside knowledge could say even if they knew.
However, as for the "common knowledge", this is all DirecTV's choice.
So you have to complain to DirecTV/request that they upgrade the software.

Thanks for the reply as when I contacted DirecTV they tell me to contact
Philips and I could find no way to contact Philips about the "704" on any of
their web sites??

Sounds like DTV is just passing the buck (or the person who answered the
phone was clueless, or both). Phillips has nothing to do with HMO.

If you are looking for an answer to whether there will be a software
upgrade to support HMO or other unannounced features, neither DirecTV
or Phillips CSRs will have an answer to that question.
When you purchase a DirecTV DVR you get the features available at the time
of purchase.

I AM SO:
Dazzzzed and Conffuuzed
OK is there such a thing as a loadable disk image of the 4.1.xxx software
which has already been "FIXED" that can be copied onto a replacement drive
of equal or larger size on a windows based machine that will work on the
Philips 704??
From everything that I have read I need to have a Linux system to do the
'UPDATES' and "FIXES" to allow me to access and back-up programs on to my
computer.
